Chapter four

The funeral is the next day. By all accounts, it is quite beautiful. They burn his remains and scatter his ashes on the tournament grounds.

Ser Jon has no time to hear Lord Prester croon over how much he'll be missed. The words reach him, nevertheless. The greatest of friends, Lord Prester says. The Lady Charlotte cries.

Bullshit.

But it buys him time, which is what he really needs. Charlotte's bruises will fade. And who would accuse a man of such a heinous crime who they publicly spoke on the character of just a few days before?

Ser Jon allows himself a smile.

The plan may have changed, but he thinks it is more perfect than it has been before.

He wins the quarter finals match in a dominant display. It is two days before the semi final bout, and some of the attention has turned to the melee and archery competitions.

He is sat in the pub, covered as always, and the ale is ice cold. He sighs audibly as he drinks. He doesn't know if he's ever tasted anything sweeter.

Sam slides into the chair across from him, his girth causing the chair to creak. “It's not real, is it?"

Ser Jon smiles. “No."

Sam is sweating visibly. “You're going to beat Valyn, aren't you? Why? Who are you?"

“None of your concern, Samantha."

His eyes widen. “You fuck–"

Ser Jon places a finger to his uncovered bottom lip. “I don't die so easily. Everything is in motion now. How do you think Lord Prester will feel when his daughter signs the Contract to serve me?"

“He'll have no choice to accept you," Sam breathes. “Otherwise he'll lose everything. You've got him. And he's out here publicly praising you – how could he say his greatest friend is not fit for his daughter?" Sam shakes his head. “How will you explain the body?"

“Mistaken identity. Who knows where those men came from. Do you, Sam?"

He gulps. “No."

“Good. Afterwards, I'll need an exit plan. Somewhere to lie low for a while."

Sam smiles, and for the first time in a long time his smile is true. “I've got the perfect thing. There is a place in the mountains – a university, believe it or not." He stands. “I should have learnt to back you by now – I'm sorry for everything."

Jon smiles. “You're a snake, Sam. You'll always be one. But we know that now – and that will help our…friendship. "

Sam nods, unsure.

“Now, leave me. I hope you'll enjoy Lord Prester's reaction as much as I will."

Kiki wakes on the day of the final before dawn. She dresses in the traditional covered clothes of her people and sits on the step to the caravan, watching the sun rise.

Her heart is a traitorous thing inside her chest. She has spent the last few days avoiding her uncle's questions. What could she tell him? The truth – even if she could tell it without ruining Ser Jon's plan – was far too sordid to admit.

And who is she to hide from the feelings inside of her?

She reaches between her legs and rubs softly.
